Professor Fuh-Gwo Yuan from North Carolina State University visited JI

Professor Fuh-Gwo Yuan, from North Carolina State University, visited JI and delivered a speech of “We Are Small! But We Can Do Big Things!-An Engineer's Reflection” on May 5th, 2023. The presentation covered both frontier fundamental and applied research on structural health monitoring/management (SHM), non-destructive evaluation (NDE), machine learning, multi-functional materials, nano/meso scale sensors, advanced computing tools with smart sensors, damage prognosis, and energy harvesting. The SJTU scholars and AMIS researchers had a great opportunity to communicate with Professor Yuan.

Biosketch:

Professor Fuh-Gwo Yuan is a Full professor at the Department of Machinery and Aerospace Engineering, North Carolina State University, where he leads group dedicated to a wide array of research and development including structural health monitoring, non -destructive detection, machine learning, multi-functional materials, nano/meso scale sensors, advanced computing tools and intelligent sensors, damage detection and energy harvesting. Since 1989, he has worked in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of North Carolina State University, successively as assistant professor (until 1994), associate professor (until 2001) and professor. Professor Yuan is also the National Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NIA) Samuel P. Langley Distinguished Professor and Director of Intelligent Materials and Structures Laboratory. He presided over nearly 50 projects including the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Science Foundation (NSF), the U.S. Army (ARO), the Office of Naval Research (ONR), and the Air Force Laboratory (AFOSR). He has published more than 200 high-level academic papers, and served as the editorial board member of AIAA Journal and other international journals, a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and many other important academic positions. Professor. Yuan received the “Structural Health Monitoring - Person of the Year (SHM-POY) Award” in 2013. He is also the recipient of the NDE lifetime achievement award in 2023.
