Professor Zhongqing Su from Hong Kong Polytechnic University visited JI
Professor Zhongqing Su, from Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), visited JI and presented “Research Endeavors on Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) towards Real-world Engineering Applications” on June 20th, 2017. The presentation covered both fundamental and applied research on ultrasonic-wave-based SHM, non-destructive evaluation (NDE), elastic wave propagation, smart materials and structures, sensors and sensor networks, and advanced composite materials. The talk briefed several representative research projects in the SHM group at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, highlighting the group’s continued endeavor in transferring technology from laboratory to engineering practice.

Professor Zhongqing Su is a Full Professor affiliated with Department of Mechanical Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), Hong Kong, where he leads a group dedicated to a wide array of research and development pertaining to guided-ultrasonic-wave-based structural health monitoring (SHM) and damage identification, with both fundamental investigations and real-world engineering applications. He earned his Ph.D. in 2004 from the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering at The University of Sydney, Australia, with a full scholarship from the Australian Federal government (International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS)). Immediately prior to this, he received his MS and BEng from the School of Aeronautical Science and Engineering at The Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (now Beihang University). Prof. Su’s research interests lie primarily in the area of SHM, wave propagation, ultrasonics, non-destructive evaluation, sensor and sensor networks, smart materials and structures. Prof. Su has been on the editorial boards of several top journals in this field. Prof. Su is the author/co-author of 2 research monographs, 4 edited books and international conference proceedings, 6 book chapters, and over 220 refereed papers including ~120 papers in top-tier SCI journals. Among his publications, the monograph, “Identification of Damage Using Lamb Waves: From Fundamentals to Applications” (Springer-Verlag, Berlin, 2009), is among the first to comprehensively elaborate SHM technology based on Lamb waves. His journal publications have been widely cited, leading to 4200+ citations and an H-index of 35 (as of April 2017). In recognition of his achievements in the field of SHM and scientific contributions to the SHM society, Prof. Su received the “Structural Health Monitoring - Person of the Year (SHM-POY) Award” in 2012, the best-recognized accolade in the field.
